I expect you’ve seen the Wikipedia entry for the Udon Thani International Airport, as well as for the city of Udon Thani? They both mention the airport’s role for the U.S. during the Vietnam War, as does the Wikitravel entry for Udon Thani.

And as is partially illustrated in this very short report from 2008, Thais, Americans join forces for Teak Torch exchange training, American and Thai military forces have maintained a strong cooperative relationship. Thanks to the American presence, there is a positive fallout for poorer people of the region, as this short 2010 report Thai students get rare opportunity to visit air force base suggests. But it goes beyond that in that medical/dental excursions have sometimes been made into the interior to remoter areas of Udon Thani province where the locals would get a rare opportunity for this sort of attention and service.
As mentioned earlier about the U.S. presence during the Vietnam War, many of those servicemen have always had a nostalgic feel for Udon Thani. And many have returned their to Retire, leaving the States. Thanks to the Internet, many of the memories and photographs of that time are available because efforts have been made by individuals and groups of ex-servicemen to keep the history alive. Here is one such effort — a collection of links to three separate Websites…although the first no longer seems to be active any longer.

In putting together this post, I came across a Udon Thani forum I have never heard of before. It appears to have been begun in 2009, but has not managed to gain too much activity since its inception. One section is devoted to the Udon/Ubon/Udorn Vietnam Era, but for want of audience or interest, there has been no participation by visitors.
