Everyday Vignettes at Home in Nong Soong
November 19, 2009
I doubt many people with find this video assemblage of much interest, except maybe from a sociological perspective. Everything was filmed by my wife’s two sons in 2008. She had gone back to Thailand in August of that year to fetch them here to Canada to live with us.
The two boys practiced using her camera, possibly beginning the evening of her first night back at home. I suspect that it was her first night back because of how baggy-eyed she is in sequences showing her.
Anyway, the evening is obviously very hot, and people in the family home are not doing very much at all — basically just lying about with fans blowing, trying to cope with the stifling heat.
For anyone who has never been to a tropical country, this should give you some notion of just what it might actually be like indoors even for natives of that climate.
Being Thai boys, whatever Tho and Pote chose to film would not necessarily be something you or I might deem worthy of capture, but perhaps that is a tick in the benefits column. There might be a naturalness to some of their footage that I as filmer, for example, would have failed to have even considered worth bothering about.
The various scenes progress through the evening, and then pick up again the next day, with some scenes inside and outside the house. The final sequences, th0ugh, seem to me to be removed from the vicinity of the house, for I do not recognize anything. I’m referring here to those images featuring the lad sweeping, and Jack’s sons’ preoccupation with something up in a fairly great tree.
