distance udon thani to vientiane
Q Distance from Thailand to Vientiane?
How far is it from Chaig Mai or Chang Rai in Thailand to Vientiane, Laos.
I will be in both Chaing Mai and Chang Rai soon and want to take a side trip to Vientaine. Is there bus service between Thailand and Laos ? Do you need a visa for Laos, if so, how much does it cost. Any recommendation for Laos (especially Vientiane) would be appreciated.
A Chiang Mai is about the same distance from Bangkok as from Vientiane (800km). I believe there is an overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Nong Kai (if not go to Udon Thani there’s a bus about every hour to Kong Kai) and a bus from Nong Kai to Vientiane.
I would suggest you get a visa in Bangkok if you can.

I think its about 1500 baht (That’s what it is at the friendship bridge). If you have your visa, at the bus station in Nong Kai get a ticket to Vientiane (170 baht $5.15).
If you don’t have a visa, get a ticket at Nong Kai to the friendship bridge( I forget the price maybe 85 baht). You’ll have to take a second bus across the friendship bridge 45 baht. Then if its before 5pm you can get a bus into Vientiane.
If its after 5pm. Vientiane is about a nine-mile 20km taxi ride from the bridge (150-300 baht from the locals).
I would stay at least overnight in Vientiane (decent hotel about 750 baht) and visit Wat That Luang 200 baht r/t. Oh and go to the local market and get some really fresh french bread and some Lao mountain grown coffee.
Of course you have to reverse this process but from Nong Kai or Udon Thani you can get a bus to Bangkok (or a Train). Its best to get the Visa in Bangkok but we negotiated the crossing without and we only had to pay 50 baht extra tea money to the Laos border guards.
The advice offered just above was in an exchange of roughly 2008 vintage, so things such as pricing do change in time.
And so do transportation options.
I want this post to offer more than just some bare facts; consequently, you will find in it quite an assortment of suggestions, opinion, articles, and more. The combination should prove interesting and entertaining.
By the way, my poor wife was suffering a rather severe allergy-based dermatological issue at the time the photo at the head of this post was taken ─ not quite what one needs when off on an extended holiday back home from Canada!

A group of internationally recognised experts examine the recent trends of cross-border movements of people, goods and economic activity at fifteen major borders in the Greater Mekong Sub-region with the aim of predicting the long terms future for this region. In the after math of the IndoChina war this region has been in the process of liberalising cross-border movements, the book illustrates that cross-border movements of goods and people have shown upward trend. The activities categorized into manufacturing industries located at border areas, border trade activities like warehouses and transhipment, and casino and tourism also prosper. However, the authors forecast that border trade activities and manufacturing industries at border areas can decline in the long run when tariff is liberalized and when labor forces move to metropolises in searching for better wages, respectively. However, they suggest that such development can continue in the mid-run with some political intentions of the governments to develop border areas.
