Pleng luk thung, or Thai country music, was invented in the early 1950s to reflect daily trials and tribulations of rural Thais. Ponsri Woranut and Suraphon Sombatjalern were the genre’s first big stars, and helped incorporate influences from Latin America, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and, especially, American film soundtracks and country music (including yodelling). Many of the most popular pleng luk thung stars have come from the central city of Suphanburi, including future megastar Pompuang Duanjan, who adapted pleng luk thung to 1980s string and pop music by making a dance-ready form called electronic luk thung. When Pompuang died in 1992, many observers felt that luk thung would die with her, but it persisted and, with the advent of the first all luk thung radio station in 1997, soon saw a major revival.
It’s just about impossible to reference Luk Thung without featuring a music video, and the site Made Loud discussed the phenomenon in an article titled Thai Luk Thung Videos, Part 1 – “Soundstage a Go-Go” (you can access the follow-up article from that page). The blog Lukthung & Morlam does a great job of profiling what’s currently out there, although the posts are somewhat irregular. Another very good site is Morlam Luktung.
It is currently August 27 as I do an edit to this post, and I have just come across an article in the Bangkok Post dated August 19 that focuses on a popular Western-born Luk Thung performer: Christy Gibson: Thailand’s blond-haired, blue-eyed luk thung crooner. I not only envy Christy to be able to live in Thailand as she does, but I even envy the guy who had the interview with her — he has apparently lived in Thailand since first going there on a visit in 2001.
A site calling itself world-music.radio.video.jazz offers about 15 Happy Thai Luk Thung songs as an album that will begin playing automatically as soon as you arrive there. I’ll have to take their word that the songs are Luk Thung — I am not proficient enough in it to know. They sound like they are from an earlier period in the music style’s history.
I have posted on Luk Thung previously, and have no wish to cite again the same older articles about the music style, so I will leave it to you to seek the posts out if you are sufficiently interested — just go to Categories and look for Music.
