Phleng Luk Thung is merely the correct full term for the music style commonly known as Luk Thung. Luk Thung translates as “child of the country,” whereas there is an urban version of the music that is known as Phleng Luk Krung — Luk Krung translates as “child of the city.” And according to Wikipedia, Luk Kreung (“child half”) denotes someone with Thai and Farang (Western) parents.
There is a thesis that might have been of interest: Principle of Buddhism as Found in Thai Folk Songs ; Phleng Luk Thung. I actually did download it just in case it might have been in English, but it was not. Had it been in English and as informative as I was hoping, I would have offered it in this post — the download process at the host site where it is now is extremely slow. If you would like to take your chances with it, it is presently available through the Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University. The thesis is rather old now, but that would not affect the value of the content.
Phumphuang Duangjan was apparently an early Phleng Luk Thung singer who managed to popularize the music style beyond Isaan by tragically dying at the age of 36 (I have also read that she was only 31). An article published Jun 10, 2002, details this whole development: Death and rebirth of Phumphuang Duangjan. This same website offer a further look at Phleng Luk Thung in a piece published April 12, 1997, titled Bangkok invaded by songs and laughter.
I am unable to say for certain that the above claim concerning Phumphuang Duangjan is exaggerated or not, but there is a far deeper look at Phleng Luk Thung offered by James Mitchell of the Sydney, Australia, Macquarie University: Review Article: Waeng Phalangwan – A Lao-Isan perspective on Thai Lukthung. This article was originally published in The Journal of Lao Studies, Volume 2, Issue 1. Be warned, for the article is quite long — around 30 pages.
I would really like to delve further into the subject, but this is merely a blog post, after all — not a scholarly work. However, I hope I have been helpful and at least pointed you towards information you were previously unaware of.
