Each time I come to this site (Academic Film Archive), I am confused. It declares this:
หมอลำ Morlam: the Music of Isaan… Documenting a musical form in VCD.
If you read the very informative text on this site relating to Morlam — apart from perhaps becoming better educated or informed — there does not seem anywhere that such a VCD is available. If I am wrong, I would be delighted to know of it!
I am coming to think that the entire discussion relates to some Morlam concerts AFA presented back in 2003, and that the Morlam information has been on the site ever since and never updated.
Check this 2003 review.
Pity, if true. I would surely have purchased such a VCD.
For a very good blog on Morlam (and Luk Thung) “album reviews and videos,” go here. You may note that the blog archive goes as far back as 2007, so there’s a whole great batch of entertainment on this site!
This Morlam Luktung site will be useful to anyone wanting to start a Morlam collection, but an absence of dating anywhere leaves me wondering just how current the site is.
The Isaan Style blog has a post from earlier this year (2010) that I can easily identify with: Isaan Village Mor Lum Concert, Thailand. My identification was with how my own wife used to be negligent in involving me in preliminaries for things that would only be vexing time-wasters for me. She’s gotten much better, though, in sparing me, and usually exercises forethought before dragging me into things.
I just have to include this photo of one of the dancers at the concert the blogger attended!
Lots of sites feature videos of Morlam songs, mostly embedded from YouTube — you can easily enough locate these on your own, I think. But if you are interested in possibly purchasing this style of music, I can point you to four sources:
