A wonderful discussion of Morlam Music is a background piece on The Academic Film Archive of North America (ASANA) website that was written by the Archive‘s director, Geoff Alexander. A lot of the article focuses on Morlam lyrics. I found a paragraph or two of the discussion concerning the lyrics used in another article on Morlam music elsewhere, but I won’t identify the site and potentially bring the website owner grief. I cannot blame him — Geoff Alexander’s article is that good.
I hope no one came to this post in the hope that I was going to list actual lyrics to any number of Morlam songs — this post would need to be huge!

The way the songs are structured is really interesting to me as well, as the lyrics seem to dictate the length of each measure so the lines stop and start in unexpected places. I hear some parallels between this and the West African “desert blues” of Tinariwen and Etran … modern!… but obviously can’t wreck the voice. Overall nice, though.
