There is a “Thai music album reviews & videos” blog called Lukthung & Morlam that certainly may interest you, if you’re in the market for some music to add to your home library, but would like some guidance.
There are so many sites that carry luktung and morlam music videos, or else that can sell you CDs and VCDs, that I am not going to take the time to list selected ones yet again — just check some of my previous posts on this topic if you seem unable to locate any yourself.
What I think I may do is start something similar — a section in which the focus will be Thai entertainment, and where there will be links to some sellers from whom you can purchase anything that takes your fancy.
I enjoy relaxing to the sound of this style of music, and also find it entertaining in a party sense if I’m in the company of Thais and Laos who are deeply into this scene.
One thing about the music videos that has always been a small negative for me is the almost universal prevalence of karaoke overwriting. I know that if I was watching current English music videos — pop, rock, ‘easy listening’ — it would annoy me no end to have the printed lyrics coursing across the screen, dominating and overlaying the visual of the artist(s).
I understand the popularity of karaoke in Asia, but it sure would be nice to be able to have quality music videos without the Thai or Lao lyrics texting throughout the performance almost like credits that cannot wait for the finish.
It’s not a big beef. And for me, I know it could possibly even be an aid in learning to read Thai script by associating it with its Western counterpart through constantly freezing the video to a motionless frame, and thereby capturing the text.
But there are easier ways of going about that sort of instruction, if it’s what someone has a mind to do.
