Doubtless, you are at least familiar with the Thai term luk thung. What I did not realize is that there is a Chinese (Cantonese) term unexpectedly similar: Luk Tung Kuen. But you can read about that for yourself — I am not about to post about it.
The Thai luk thung is short for plung luk thung, as you can read in the Wikipedia link above. As the blog website Haji Maji describes the genre over three years ago:
In the 1950s, rural Thais from the northeast (Isan) and elsewhere began moving to the big cities to look for work. It’s the same old story found all across the world – the rural music was transformed in urban ghettos and a new popular music was born. The huge success of some of the big stars of the 50s such as Waiphot Phetsuhan, Phloen Phromdaen and Suraphon Sombatchoroen inspired many rural people to dream of escaping poverty by becoming luk thung stars. Independent record labels proliferated and continued releasing luk thung 78s into the 1960′s. By the 1980′s, luk thung was the unrivaled pop music of Thailand and only recently has a modernized type of molam begun to catch up.
It’s unfortunate indeed that the musical link provided on that webpage no longer functions.
A famous (in Thailand) movie was released in 1970 with a storyline entirely centred around luk thung: Monrak Luk Thung. As you can see in that Wikipedia article, the movie inspired a TV series in the 1990s, and a movie re-make in 2005. Even though you can read the article for yourself, I cannot resist quoting the mess I found when I tried to read the plot outline given there for the movie — how is it that no one has done anything about this? It is like the worst example of article spinning:

I wanted to have this blathering travesty captured in the event that someone at Wikipedia does wake up to this gibberish and make it right — can you understand it clearly enough to work out the plot? My, Lord! It is something like this that impugns Wikipedia‘s legitimacy as an authority reference.
By the way, I cited the blog website Haji Maji earlier. The blog owner is behind what seems to me to be quite an interesting 14-track “LP” (does that mean it is vinyl?) titled LUK THUNG: CLASSIC & OBSCURE 78S FROM THE THAI COUNTRYSIDE.
A website the focuses on reviews of this kind of music is Morlam Luktung. Another very excellent site was referred to in Haji Mawji: MonrakPlengThai.
I was a bit surprised to see that a showcase website for Bangkok entertainment that is called Bangkok Events Calendar has a Luk Thung subcategory within the Music category. I am doing an edit to this post on February 27, 2012, and the Luk Thung subcategory is advertising an upcoming March 10-11 show and proclaiming: Your famous artist is back! Got Chakrapan the diamond of luk tung music.
YouTube has a wealth of music videos in the luk thung genre, and many other websites have catalogued them together, as well. I won’t spend time listing them — I have done so in previous posts.
