I am reluctant to delve into this area because of the risks associated with the files and sites involved. I want to make that clear.
One unrelated issue I have with the sites that offer music downloads is their misleading search results. For instance, check out MP3Raid. The term used to search their database in this instance was ‘luk thung thai.’ The results I got came with this claim:
There are 2144 luk thung thai mp3 files, displaying only most relevant 200 of them.
Really?
Well, I do see 10 choices straight off on the page, with numerous other pages available to progress to. But when I went to page 10, I could not seem to call up the next pages in sequence, even though they are listed there as options. I am told that ‘we didn’t find any results for “luk thung thai”!‘
It seems to me that the 100 available files are a far cry from the claimed 2,144 that are supposedly in the database.
But are these truly thai luk thung songs? If you look at the titles carefully, apart from the first two which have ‘luk thung’ in the title, I would have to say that the pickings in that context are slim indeed. What has been brought forth on offer are absolutely any song titles that have at least one of the words used in the search — thus, as long as a title has ‘luk’ or ‘thung’ or ‘thai’ in the title, then that song is included. There is no true ‘luk thung’ category within this site at all. Many of the songs are not even Thai, and have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Luk Thung music.
Exactly the same sort of search results occur with Musicboot. The search term “thai lukthung song” seemed to bring up just about any song that included at least one of those words in the song title (even the word “song”), or else the artist’s name. The only true Luk Thung songs you would locate would be any that actually had that name in the title. There is no Luk Thung category, so no Luk Thung songs within that database would show if the term was not actually in the title.
If you do not have a specific Luk Thung song title or artist in mind when you are searching a site, then you are not going to find Luk Thung songs — these sites just do not categorize their music in that fashion.
Files Tube appears to have a selection of Luk Thung songs and albums for download, although I do not believe there is a Luk Thung category. My search brought up a claim of 38 listings, all of which likely have the term ‘luk thung’ in the title, or else in the description of the download. I am sure there are probably Luk Thung songs in the database that are not shown because they fail to have the term ‘luk thung’ specifically mentioned in their description — you would need to search for any specific Luk Thung song that you knew of. However, you should quickly note that there are numerous repetitions of titles in the 38 listings I spoke of — maybe because there are so many different target sites hosting the files, and each one is listed as being independent of the others. I never attempted to actually download anything, so I cannot tell you what to expect if you try.
I personally found that searching the web for Luk Thung downloads was too disappointing for me to care to bother with. I even came across one site that looked promising, but the Web of Trust (WOB) Firefox Add-on that I have showed that the site was a deep risk — some visitors left comments reporting that they encountered virus attacks even before attempting a download.
To me, it is just not worth taking the risk to seek out such files.
Buy the music if you like it, and support the artists!
