The article is not specific to Isaan; however, Wikipedia has a very detailed entry on Traditional Thai musical instruments that should not be ignored by anyone doing some research on the subject.

I noticed a couple of sites like eBay have Isaan represented with musical instruments that are being offered for bids.

I was a little surprised to see that the Thailand Covenant Church has a page to help Isaan churches obtain Isaan Musical Instruments they may be in need of. The statement was made that some instruments were available from “IACM in Udon Thani.” I had no idea what that was, so checked it out: Institute for Applied Church Ministry, formerly known as Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD).

Here’s a novelty — the Ching. The sound of these ‘finger cymbals’ seems to be an ‘app’ for an iPhone or an i Pod.

I came across a reproduced old article from the Bangkok Post, circa 1995, titled History’s broken record plays on. Pretty good reading! It claimed: “During the time of the Roi Et rebellion [around 1901, I believe], singing Laotian songs and playing the khaen, or reed organ, an Isan musical instrument were forbidden.

I will close off with a link to a four-page .pdf excerpt from a 2009 edition of the Journal of Social Sciences that looks in depth at the Khaen, one of the most identifiable Isaan instruments.

memoirs of an Isaan story

jeddersdrumsnmusic | January 05, 2009

I sung this in Thai, however it is rough and needs more work. All instruments are played by myself, and I wrote and recorded it in a 3 hour studio session, so it is very rough. I am also not a singer, and have never sung before….especially in a language that I only know a little of, so go easy on me tiger!

It is a response about my time in Thailand, and the song is about the Thai man who meets a young lady, leaves her with child, and then meets her years later to find her working the bar because she had no choice. It is about regret and the loss of innocence, however many Thai people will probably not understand my attempt at their language.

Please give honest opinions, as I am doing this for my degree in music, and I will be writing about it.

Tell me what you think of it, what things you understand about it, how well you think I am interpreting parts of the Thai culture, what you think of the musical nature, etc. cheers!
