I’m a relative fledgling where exposure to mp3 media is concerned — Heck, I still buy CDs. However, I have a few observations and examples I’d like to take the time to briefly illustrate.
First, take a listen to this. I hope it plays!
I cannot tell what the language is of the …woman?…doing the vocals, but the group may call itself Transformasi Relaxation Lounge. The song itself is Isaan Dai…but I haven’t a clue if it relates to Thailand. All I’ve been able to find out is that the group may hail from Malaysia.
I kind of like the tune, though — it would definitely fit as background lounge music.
Aside from music, there are of course things like language lessons in mp3 format. A few years ago, I bought a beginner’s audio course on CD. I never got beyond the first lesson. It began with a selection of a simple word or two that got repetitive treatment to the point of being boring. How many times does a beginner need to hear “Khrap” repeated over and over?
And then suddenly it launched into a complex long sentence that did not at all benefit from any repeating whatsoever of the individual components of that sentence, and I could not discern one word from the next. It was little more than a fast, strung-out, stretch of noise to my foreign ear.
My brother could do no better with it, nor could his daughter of approximately 11 or 12.
There was no text to refer to in order to give a phonetic assist.
I’ve never touched the useless thing again.
I expect I’d do little better with something like this.
If you click the arrow beside the loud-speaker symbol — and don’t bother with the Download (when I tried it, only half of the phrases below it were yielded) — you’ll hear each of the short statements spoken by a man, and then the Isaan Thai version as given by a woman.
It, too, was useless to me. I need to see written text in order to follow what the Thai person is saying. Otherwise, I can hardly separate one word from the other, and they run together meaninglessly.
I at least like that it was Isaan Thai.
I suspect that the series of reasonably inexpensive tutorials offered here would help me. And once I’m Retired, I may undertake this very series…I just wish that it wasn’t standard Thai, since Isaan is where I intend to spend most of my Thai time one day.
I doubt I could handle this….but given the free time, who can say? (But when would I ever find time to try and learn any Phutai?!)
I see that the phrasebook and mp3 CD are available through DCO Thai – the ad link near the top of this post.
Getting back to music, there are sites where you can download mp3 versions of albums for free, such as this Sieng Isaan album by Carabao. I think the site’s free to join.
I’d personally prefer to legitimately buy a hard copy of any of the music I like, but in cases where I don’t have an interest whatsoever in the artist, I can see how being able to acquire it for free can’t hurt. If I would never have bought the artist in the first place, there’s always the chance that by having a free copy, I might actually grow to appreciate the artist.
But that’s my rationale.
I neither understand much French, nor can I read Thai, but this site seems to offer a selection of 16 Isaan-style songs in mp3 format that you can listen to — just click on the Thai song title. It’s a slight hassle in that you have to hit the back button each time a song finishes in order to go back to the album list.
But it’s a nice collection — I wouldn’t mind owning it!
I’ve not had a good experience with a ‘torrent’ site — the only rip-off site I ever tried — so I can offer no tips on using this one if you are new to this media yourself.
However, I have to say that it would be nice to be able to at least hear some samples. I suspect, though, that people who take on these full album downloads are already familiar with the albums.
I don’t know if any of the preceding has been of use to you, but I sincerely hope you don’t feel that you’ve wasted your time here.
