Instruments
Did you arrive here to read something of Isaan musical instruments? Music wasn’t exactly specified, but let’s go with it!
The following three images are from the Chaweng Buri Resort on Koh Samui page detailing their Chaweng Beach BBQ where they “offer a combination of Thai classical Dance, Isaan Instruments and Dance, local southern dance and all of this accompanied by a seafood or meat buffet.”
We have one of those dulcimer-like instruments, by the way. I have no idea where my wife acquired it, however. I think it was ornamentation for her unsuccessful Pattaya Thai Restaurant.
You may or may not have heard of the Thailand Covenant Church. I read mention of “Isaan instruments” in relation to a couple of different occurrences on their website. One rather quaint story told of how a family of Christians in the Isaan village of Non San dealt with some anti-Christian sentiment leveled at them by other village members who sound more like “voo-doo” practictioners or “witch doctors” than mere Buddhists. You might enjoy reading it — called The Cross and the Tree, the account was apparently written back in 2001.
Part of the TCC notion of “Christian contextualization” involves buying Isaan instruments and “teaching people to play them.” You can find mention of this practice in a few places in this archive of Newsletters from the DeNeuis. One reference is back in a newsletter from April 1998.
You must surely know about the huge troupe of Isaan dancers, musicians, and slap-stick comedians who are very popular with Thai people in Thailand and abroad — I had always thought they were probably called the Talok Isaan Band or something of that nature, but I recently read that “talok” just refers to any group of performers who engage in this sort of entertainment, and that the band itself may actually be called the Ponglang Sa-On band. If I am off track here, I would certainly appreciate being corrected. At any rate, I bring it up because they of course employ Isaan instruments, as well as some Western electronic ones.
Clearly, I am no specialist or authority on Isaan musical instruments. Thus, I instead direct readers to articles like The Rough Guide to Issan Music, by Linda Danielson.
I envy people who can play a musical instrument — or sing, or even whistle skilfully. A young lady by the name of Kelly Fitz spent a year in Thailand, living with a Thai family. After she came back to the States, she said this about her Thai “brother:”
Macky (my brother) has some serious music talent. He can play all the traditional Isaan instruments but right now is in the “I really want a guitar” phase. It’s a little expensive so I hope he can get it someday. The joke is that I will buy a guitar secondhand and send it to him from the US.
I very much apologize, but I am going to have to stop work on this post right here. My computer is running so sluggishly, it’s nearly impossible to cope with. But even worse is the fact that my mouse’s cursor keeps disappearing. I fully intended to go much farther with this topic — it is a very rich one. However, I simply do not have the working tools to carry on at this time. Perhaps shutting down my computer and restarting it will clear up the current issue, but the problems have consumed so much of my time today that I must get on with other things. Perhaps one day I can return and do an edit, exploring the topic in greater depth.
