Another post that has nary a thing to do with Isaan nor Thailand.
Back in the mid-1960s, when I was a teen, my young brother and Norman Dearing — a friend of mine — walked to the Surrey Drive-In to sit in an open shelter that was there for the sake of pedestrians who wanted the outdoor theatre experience. It was also a place where car-less young couples could go and neck.
The movie we had come to see was the UK production Zulu. For the time, it was an incredible action experience. The three of us talked of the show all the way home afterwards.
Apparently the movie depicted a battle between about 4,000 Zulu warriors and 139 British soldiers, these latter who were dug in at a fortified mission station. The 4,000 attacking Zulus were a breakaway group who had been part of a larger force of 20,000 warriors who had just finished overwhelming and slaughtering a British force that was a tenth of their size. This unusually successful slaughter of so many British military is known as the Battle of Isandlwana.
At any rate, it can be understood that 139 soldiers must not have seemed much of a threat to the 4,000 Zulus after being part of a force involved in taking down nearly 2,000 others of the foreign invaders a day or so earlier.
As can be imagined, much has been published about the Anglo-Zulu War — including records of the British soldiers killed. One such is this LIST of Officers and Men killed in action at the Camp, Isandhlwana Hill, Zululand, on the 22nd January, 1879.
And with that, I will leave this topic, and leave it to you to research further, should that be your interest.
