Sampling Tasty Cuisine in Thailand
Sampling Tasty Cuisine in Thailand
Thailand is famous for its cuisine — Thai cuisine is, of course, the national cuisine of Thailand. People of Thailand are very fond of the strong aromatic component; that is why a lot of importance is given to spicy food. There are basically four important fundamental tastes — sour, sweet, salty, and bitter; and Thai food can be very hot, especially to the western palate. Food is the main attraction in any social occasion; being very social and friendly in nature, Thai people enjoy food-eating in groups. Eating alone is considered bad luck in Thailand. Another important factor is that Thai people do not waste food, as it is considered a bad omen, and it is also considered that it would enrage the Thai god of rice — a female deity which keeps a close watch on the people.
In Thai restaurants, traditional Thai meals usually start with sticky rice and spicy dipping sauce. In Thailand, people do not believe in starters. People here order one dish each and enjoy it together; the food is usually incomplete if does not contain all the four tastes like sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. Food is one of the main components in Thai culture, so Thai people always ensure that everybody in Thailand should have food to eat. There is lot of influence of Indian spices and flavors, and some of the curries also resemble Indian curries in color; but even then, the uniqueness of Thailand can be found in the food. The addition of local spices and flavors maintain the uniqueness of Thai food; the main spices are Thai holy basils, lemongrass, and galangal, the Thai ginger. Most of the dishes are incomplete without fish, meat, vegetable, a noodle, and maybe a soup. And deserts, which comprise of fresh fruits (preferably pineapple), rice cakes, etc., depending upon the region, and which are well decorated.
Besides daily meals, Thai snacks are also very famous. The snacks are freely available, and are quite economical — you can pick up snacks on the roadside, or may go to any market place to enjoy them. The most popular snacks are spring rolls, chicken or beef satay, raw vegetables, soups, salads, and sweets. The formal presentation of food is quite famous, and a part of Thai culture. Thai food presentation is the most unique in the world. The serving platters are normally decorated, with beautifully carved vegetables and fruits resembling flowers. Thai chefs are quite talented in this, and they use a simple paring knife to do it; they also use ice water to prevent discoloration of vegetables and fruits. The Siamese cuisine, which is considered to be the heart of Thai food, was introduced somewhere in the thirteenth century. The Siamese cuisine is made up of various types of meat and seafood, combined with the locally available vegetables, herbs, spices like garlic and pepper, and served with rice.
Thai food has a variety of sauces and condiments included, which in local language is known as nam-chim and phrik nam pla. Nam pla phrik is a sauce consisting of fish sauce, lime juice added with chopped chilies and ginger, dried chili flakes, and sweet chili sauce. In most of the restaurants, tourists can find a vast variety of condiments; some contain sugar, and are usually kept on the dining table. In some of the dishes like pork stewed with soy sauce and served with rice, Thai peppers along with raw garlic is served — this dish is known as Khao Kha MU. Cucumber is normally served with spicy and hot foods to cool the mouth. Some of the main food in Thailand is:-
- Khao-Phat- One of the most common dishes in Thailand, it is fried rice with chicken, shrimp, pork, or crab; or else pineapple; or even coconut.
- Khao-Phat American- American fried rice only found in Thailand.
- Kuai-Tiao Nam- Rice noodles, which can be taken any time, can be had with vegetables and spicy condiments.
- Phat-Thai- Rice noodles pan-fried with fish sauce, sugar, lime juice or tamarind, chopped peanuts, and eggs; combined with chicken or seafood.
The people of Thailand are very fond of eating, and they are also excellent hosts; they enjoy the company, and never eat alone. Thailand, apart from its beauty, is a place where people can enjoy a variety of food — be it vegetarian or non vegetarian. There are many regional styles of food from Isaan to Lao that influence the diversity of foods available in Thailand. The seafood in Thailand is always fresh, and some of the best, worth relishing. Once in Thailand, never forget to enjoy the Thai food, which has now crossed borders, and is available in many countries, because of its uniqueness and originality.
