Perhaps it is unfortunate for me, but I am one who eats to live. I could never be a food critic, or someone who writes travel articles that focus on the fare being offered wherever I may be staying abroad throughout the World. Such articles absolutely bore me. In fact, I rather prefer not being exposed to feasts because I frankly do not like overeating — I hate being incapacitated by a full stomach. Anytime I was in Thailand, the bulk of my meals were mainly fried rice dishes. I just needed enough grub to knock off any hunger, and to fortify me for whatever lied ahead in my day. Also, something simple like that did not make having a couple of very large Beer Changs (if they were available where I was eating) an uncomfortable process to get them down. Jack (Supranee) and I generally would have been up very late, so we tended to get a late start on our days. Thus, breakfast was more of a midday meal…and I usually really needed a beer or two.

On quite a related note, it exasperates my Isaan wife Jack no end that I eat her leftovers straight out of the fridge — cold — and do not heat them up.  She also becomes agitated with me when I mix up my food on my plate, rather than eat each portion individually of whatever separate dishes she may have prepared and served up for me.  You see, various ‘goulashes’ figured largely in my formative years growing up.

Consequently, I will leave it to others to speak of Isaan dishes. Here is a brief round-up. I would have had no trouble adding many, many more references, but I am doing this edit to the post on Sunday afternoon, August 28 (2011), and I very much want to get out into the back yard where I live here in Canada, and do some sunning while the couple of hours are still there for it. The shade has taken over by 6:00 p.m. already at this time of year.

A highlight of Thailand’s Isaan region is its cuisine, so as the sun started to descend on Khon Kaen, we made our way from the lakeside markets through the town centre, where the footpaths are crammed with food stalls, and
