I just came upon this video story today (November 25/2010) while doing an edit to this post. I truly do not know what to say — I have my own issues relating to both health and finances, so I feel strong sympathy for these poor unfortunates. I wish dearly I could help.

The agent said that we wouldn’t lose our money. Even if we couldn’t pick as much berries as the company targets said we were promised that the wages would still be guaranteed. They said there was no risk for us to lose our money.
So we decided to come to Sweden.
This video shows testimonies of several of the Thai berry pickers who are protesting in Sweden since early October this year after they have not received their wages. 117 pickers returned to Thailand on the 2nd October but 39 pickers refuse to go back to Thailand unless their wages are paid.
I wanted to learn more of this story, and found this very small update on Facebook. And even more is here.
Sadly, this story is not isolated, and similar tales of exploitation exist for some years now — note this quote from a document produced early in 2010:
By 2009 the attractive tales of ‘first generation’ berry-pickers (10 years ago) bringing home 300 000 Baht after paying all expenses (40 – 60,000) were all but history. If in 2010 recruiting agency fees remain as high or higher than in 2009 and the harvest in Thailand is poor and the berry season in Sweden is as poor as in 2009, 2010 will see another several thousand small farmers going bankrupt in North-East Thailand.

The story is this: a girl was out with friends having drinks on King St (in Toronto ). This guy approaches her and won’t leave her alone -saying how cute she is. She finally gives in and hands the guy her business card to get rid of him.
The attached is an MP3 file of not one, but TWO voicemails this guy left. This goes down in the history books – especially the second voice mail.
After hearing them you can clearly see why she didn’t call him back – instead she called in to the Z103.5 morning show & had them play this on the air.
Love it. Way too funny. Guys are such idiots sometimes. lol
