Buddhist Temples

Wikipedia makes this claim concerning Udon Thani:

Although there are few attractions in the city for most travellers, there are a few interesting Buddhist temples. Within a few kilometers of Udon Thani is Wat Pa Baan That, which was home for many years to Forest Meditation monk Luangta Maha Bua, known for his philanthropic endeavors such as accumulating gold and giving it to the National Treasury to benefit Thailand’s citizens during the economic crisis of the late 1990′s. It is said that over the course of his tenure at this temple over $550-million (USD) was collected for the benefit of Thai citziens, be it directly or via building of hospitals and clinics. Ajahn Maha Bua died in January 2011.

Perhaps. I suppose it all depends on just what it is about Udon Thani City that has drawn the visitor. I doubt many former U.S. military personnel who were stationed in the Udon Thani area for their tour during the Vietnam War would necessarily agree, for example.

Wikipedia elsewhere bothers to identify two temples in its Category: Buddhist temples in Udon Thani Province. Perhaps the section will have been amplified somewhat by the time you make reference to it.

A member of Panoramio posted a nice photo of a temple in the Thung Fon district of Udon Thani Province. The site Lostinthailand.com attempts to describe a half-dozen, but without benefit of any accompanying illustrations. ThaiWorldView does have some illustrations to accompany its sparse text. A similar presentation is still available after all these years at Thanin Wong-asa’s guide to Udon Thani. His may have been the first guide to Udon Thani that I may have ever seen back in 2002 when I was giving serious consideration to visiting Thailand.

A small image of the Ban Chiang Temple is available at Twip.org. Descriptions of this place are commonly enough found. Likewise Phu Phra Bat, which is really a park, but this area with the special rock formations is treated with the respect one would display if at a temple.

Wat Pa Ban Tat is given some coverage at ThailandBuddy.com.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page at ThaiSmile.jp, you can find a description and illustrations of the very unusual Nakhon Shanode, where there is an entrance to “the dragon world.”

Some useful temple information is to be found in an UdonMap forum thread begun April 19, 2011, that is titled Temple on Mountain. And from December 24, 2011: Luangta Boon Phin…which temple?

Here are some other temple references you may or may not find of use or interest:

Wat Ban Waeng (Pho Chai Sri)is a unique temple 50km’s north west of Udon Thani, Thailand. It is home of Luang Pho Phra Sai, a bronze image of a seated Buddha. Additionally, if you stroll around the grounds of this Wat you

Udon Thani. Arrived in Udon Thani by bus from Laos. The bus station in right in the middle of this great little town in North East Thailand. There is a train service as well with a few trains a day to and from Bangkok. There are quite a few parks around the city and of course an abundance of temples. One of the park I went to has lots of ponds stocked with fish. You can buy bread from vendors and feed the fish. The water turns bubbling spa as the thousands of fish fight

Udon Thani update. Posted on November 9, 2011 | 2 Comments. (written by Dave). Dinner with Forrest and his friend Dang was great. They came to our hotel (The Irish Clock) where we ate and drank western food and beer. There was a band as well, 3 Thai guys playing western hits. When it comes to maintaining the fantastic temples, the only expense is the materials as most labour is donated or completed by monks. And often materials are also donated. We didn’t get around to
