Until researching this post, I was unfamiliar with Rachinee Morlum (yes, I am aware that the title post is spelled “Morlam”) — which I believe translates as “Queen of Morlum,” a reference to a woman who would clearly be a very exceptional Morlum singer. A brief description of the TV series is available at Asian Movie Fanatic, where you can find a link to a number of episodes listed together that are available on YouTube.  A very much better series description is at Asian Fuse Wiki. I’d like to watch this series!

The series as YouTube videos is also available at  Lao4Lao.com, but as with the videos in the link I mentioned above, the later episodes are not available because whoever originally uploaded them decided to remove them — perhaps a copyright issue.

I suppose that it is the TV series theme song that is available at the website Khmer.be.  The song sounds to me like the tune that is being played on a khene at the beginning in the first YouTube video that I happened to watch at the Lao4Lao.com website.  It’s quite pleasant, in a sort of lonely way.

I see that the “soap opera” is available to purchase as a complete set of 20 VCDs at eThaiCD:

However, as of the date of this post, the package is currently unavailable or out of stock. I also see that this is “not the official set” — if the VCD package is unofficial, that may explain why it is listed as ** Not for sale in Thailand **.

A much less expensive four-DVD package are also on offer, but the same conditions exist as for the VCDs — i.e., unofficial, and not currently available:

I watched a couple more of the YouTube videos — I caught the scene where the runaway mother sees a little girl (who is actually her granddaughter in the show) in the city one day, and is struck by how much the little girl resembles her own long-abandoned daughter. So she cannot help but try and get a closer look at the little girl…and then recognizes the blind man with the girl as the husband she had abandoned so long ago.

Unable to turn away, the mother has to go and sit with them, openly crying and lavishing affection upon the girl to such extent that the little girl is initially very frightened. The husband has no idea who the woman is. When she is able to compose herself, she responds to the little girl’s questioning with affirmative or negative shakes of her head — for she dares not speak and reveal who she is to her abandoned husband. Then, after putting some cash into the husband’s hands, and almost tearing away from the little girl who had become drawn to the strange nice woman, she leaves them.

Yes, I would love to see this series, although I would like to understand the conversations — I would need sub-titles. However, I could probably enjoy it very much if I was watching it on a big-screen TV with my Isaan wife Jack, getting some occasional commentary from her.

Maybe one day I will obtain the full series, and report on it after watching it.
