udon thani skydive

I was a modicum surprised when I read a post on the blog My Thai from last Hallowe’en titled Udon Thani – Skydive Mecca. The author wrote of just having learned about the famous 2006 jump, despite writing that he was an active fan of the sport. It surprised me that he did not know about it — I have no interest in the sport, but I have known of Udon Thani’s role as a venue for that jump since as far back as that same year — and frequent other jumps that have taken place there since.
Of course, I suppose that the author — German-born Ajarn Sacha, who is 37 or 38 — has never read the UdonMap forum, despite teaching English in Udon Thani at a vocational school.
The UdonMap forum often has threads about skydriving, such as this one from 2007 titled Skydiving in Udon Thani.
There is a site called Skydive Asia that seems to have gone nowhere. It compiled a list of planned jumps beginning in 2005 and stretching on into 2008, a few of which indicated Udon Thani as the scene of the event. However, those 2008 jumps are only deemed ‘confirmed,’ as opposed to earlier jumps listed as either ‘cancelled’ or ‘completed.’ So it would seem that no one has updated the site since probably 2007 — even though a notation at the bottom of that page says “Last update: 7 April 2005.” I guess the site owner lost interest in maintaining the site.
If you care to read about that famous 2006 jump in Udon Thani, one very good account from that year is on a site called AvWeb: The Making of the World’s Largest Skydive:
The world’s most experienced skydivers recently met in Thailand to build a record, 400-way formation. What did it take? The resources of an entire air force, 300 tons of Jet-A, a trainload of oxygen bottles and the determined endurance of a marathon runner, according to AVweb’s Editorial Director (and skydiver) Paul Bertorelli.
Paul Bertorelli mentions that jumpers known as The World Team were behind this amazing jump — they have their own website here.
A forum on the site Dropzone has an archive of posts relating to The World Team — you can refer back to the 2006 threads discussing that jump. They are probably mainly posts by various team members, and ought to prove of interest to anyone who enjoys skydive talk.
Unfortunately for me, I have been struggling to withstand the onset of a migraine halo while working on this post, so I am going to call a halt to it here and go and lie down for awhile. There is no headache associated with the attack — the halo ‘merely’ causes my vision to swirl until much of my sight is essentially blinded from the visual vortex, and it becomes impossible to discern anything clearly.
