To start this post, I would like to draw your attention to LearnSpeakThai.com where these four questions are answered:
1) Why should I learn to speak and understand Isaan Thai?
2) Isn’t the language isaan people speak just Lao?
3) Just how different is the Isaan Thai language to Central Thai?
4) Just how different is Isaan Thai to Lao?
Take it from there!
There is even a site devoted to the Thai language: thai-language.com. You can find lots of resources there, including a forum section.
The Christian site The Living Hour has long been heralding the coming of an English-Isaan (Isan) Dictionary, but it still does not seem to have been completed. I am certain it will prove a resounding resource.
The site Siamsmile put together a couple of handfuls of Isaan/English/Thai words and phrases in table format — with a few Isaan sound samples. Just a teaser!
Now, there is a 2004 paper titled ISAN: THE PLANNING CONTEXT FOR LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE AND REVITALIZATION. I understood that Isaan is quite different from mainstream — or Central — Thai. But I guess what I did not appreciate is that even though the Northeast of Thailand is Isaan and speaks variations of Issan, barely any people have the Isaan script. Everyone writes their Isaan in Central Thai script — Isaan as a written script is nearly lost. But it’s even worse than this:
This paper takes the standpoint that Isan as a language, and possibly as a culture, will, after a long process of language shift rather than a sudden reduction in a number of speakers, die in the next 100-200 years. Tossa (1999) is less optimistic, and argues that the next generation is crucial, with mutual incomprehensibility already manifesting itself in the case of urban and rural Isan, and significant culture death already occurring. Without a written language, the likelihood is that Isan will never attain “safe” status as an official regional language of Thailand, and consequently will be one of the 6,000 “local vernacular languages” that will die out (Kraus, 1992, cited in Ash, Little Doe Fermino & Hale 2001).
This paper also takes the point of view that if Isan people so wish, nothing should be done to prevent this death, and that in this case Isan as a language and a culture should be recorded, catalogued and preserved in libraries and museums for mainly academic purposes.
Some discussion of the choices available is now presented, followed by a discussion of potential disadvantages and advantages of language maintenance and revitalization.
If you want to take a look at it, the paper is here.
I realized that Isaan people like my wife and her sons do have their own language, but I never fathomed that they probably do not know how to write any of it in its own script.
What a thing to lose! Of course it cannot survive — not when Central Thai is the only instruction in the schools. I can see the argument that even spoken Isaan will inevitably die out if some concerted action is not taken.
The script needs to be not just preserved, but taught again in schools.
