I have occasionally considered buying something like the following Thai-Isan-Lao Phrasebook with MP3 CD by Asger Mollerup. I may yet.
A few years ago, I had thought to first learn Thai, and then give Isaan Thai a tackle. However, my wife is from Isaan, and any time I might spend in Thailand would be primarily in the Udon Thani region. Besides, I am 61 now. It has begun to seem more reasonable to me to learn as much Isaan as I can. One would expect that having an Isaan wife would be a boon in that respect…but she is rather quirky about me learning much of the language, whether Thai or Isaan. She claims that she just does not like — in general — how Farangs speak Thai. And of considerable bother to her are those Farangs who only ever learn the equivalent in Thai that many bar girls do with English.
The topmost entry on this forum is an extreme example of what she does not care to hear coming out of Farang mouths.
Another forum has this thread titled Two most useful Thai phrases to learn — it touches on some Isaan.
Yet a third forum has a thread titled Speaking “Isaan” Help required. The Teak Door‘s forum post Learn to Speak Issan may also help you out.
The site SiamSmile offers a discussion of the Isaan Dialect that includes some examples — you can choose to hear them spoken, in fact.
And take note that Wikipedia’s entry for Isan language gets quite heavily into the topic.
