Why do many taxi drivers in Bangkok –DO NOT KNOW THE WAY AROUND AND STILL TAKE YOU?
1- The driver might just have arrived from Isaan and truly does not know the way.
2- A few drivers spot you as a gullible farang and do city sightseeing with you.
3- It’s impolite to say ‘no’ in Thai (highly unusual for taxi drivers)
4- Language difficulties: you know where you want to go to, but are not able to tell the driver, or the driver doesn’t know and can’t say it in English.
I live here, and I have rarely been taken for a ride by taxis. On the few occasions a driver did loose his way and started circling, most of them turned off the meter. Another stopped, asked a friend (another taxi) to take me over. He didn’t charge me anything, as he felt ashamed. (Gave him something for his trouble anyway.)
Most of the drivers are honest people, but there are of course a few rotten apples. Given that Bangkok has over 40.000 metered taxis, that can add up.
I have watched for the past couple of years as progress has proceeded on an English-Isaan Dictionary by the folks behind The Living Hour (their apparent motto: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever) — a group that I had just assumed were a non-denomination Christian enterprise. I suppose they may be, but note:
LivingHour.org is an independent Thailand-based publisher that believes in the old adage that when you learn a new language, you acquire a new soul. We are dedicated to publishing unique easy Thai & Isaan language books that focus on the colloquial language of Thailand, as well as SBNR books that provide fresh perspectives on the spiritual life, via Progressive Christian, Buddhist, and Taoist traditions.
(SBNR means Spiritual But Not Religious.)
Any Christian-based group that not only goes light on the proselytizing, but actually embraces and promotes the spirituality behind Buddhism and Taoism, is my kind of Christianity! As far as I can tell, they are not on any kind of mission to actively convert Buddhist Thais to Christianity, and I can keenly appreciate that.
Unfortunately, their English-Isaan (Isan) Dictionary is not yet published, but this is currently on their website:
…Stay tuned for the release of our handy English-Isaan Dictionary. Although Isaan does not have a written form, we are transcribing the words into Thai script as well as a Romanized transliteration. We hope to have it released within the next couple months.
In the meantime you can add 100s of Thai words to your working vocabulary in only a week’s time by picking up the our English loanword (cognate) dictionary and learning tool for only $8.99 (print) and $3.99 (ebook). For Buyers in Thailand: Purchase the workbook version for only 225 baht. Contact us at living(at)livinghour.org to receive the ATM transfer details.
If you are curious about just what they currently have on offer: Click here to visit Living Hour – Learn Thai-Isaan Language Books.
I rather like the sound of The Original Thai-English Language Cognate Dictionary & Learning Tool, as illustrated just above. Maybe I’ll invest in a copy while I await the release of the English-Isaan Dictionary.

Where can I get pics of Thailand?
No not the big cities but the villages in northeast Thailand.. I want to know about living conditions electricity, plumbing what a persons wages are if he trvels to city to work
Thank you in advance
Hi there, I know that most Thai people without a degree would earn Bangkok would earn about 6,000 Thai Baht per month. If they have have a degree they would earn 10,000 baht up per month… If they are very qualified managers working for international companies, the sky is the limit!
Farang (foreigner) working in Thailand can earn a decent wage. At least 30,000-40,000 and even up to 60,000 as an English teacher and usually more than 100,000 Baht per month as a manager with an international company.
In Isaan in the North East of Thailand, people would earn 200 Baht a day with no degree, or maybe 10,000 baht a month with a degree. A lot of Thai people from the North East (Isaan) travel to Bangkok to find work. They can work in many industries, factories, department stores etc. If they get a degree they can find good office jobs.
The old style houses in Isaan are wooden and have very basic outdoor bathroom and toilets I have travelled there and even stayed overnight in a traditional thaistyle house! The newer more modern houses are made of concrete and tiles. They usually have decent bathrooms. Almost everyone has electricity in Thailand countryside.
There is a good travel guide at http://www.thaistyle.co.nz/travel_guide/ Thailand is a fantastic country and the best way to experience it is to travel there yourself!
Hope I have answered your question sufficiently. Good luck and safe travels!
