A traveler could also take a train or bus, or even drive, but that was not specified in the post title. I would hope no one has come to this post hoping for any of those discussions. But note that I did go to the official Thailand railway website to have a look at their train schedules to get an idea on costs, selecting the ‘English’ feature near the upper right. To my amusement, although everything did change into English, the drop-down menus and all schedules were in Thai anyway. Thus, for anyone Thai-illiterate as am I, there hardly seemed a purpose for having that English option. Fortunately, there are other sites to help with understanding the needed train travel information.

As for flights, obviously it’s going to depend on when you plan your trip. There’s little sense in me doing fare searches with no projected date in mind that might be relevant to you. And to illustrate just how involved a discussion on flights from Udon Thani to Bangkok can become, the UdonMap forum has a thread from August, 2010, titled Udon Thani to Bangkok Thai Airways that ran six pages in length. The same site also bears the Udon Thani International Airport‘s daily ‘Arrivals & Departures‘ chart — you can look at it to glean a good idea on just what time flights do leave for Bangkok, and which airways are flying at those times.

As for costs, as I have already said, it seems futile to me to make sample searches that will be for dates that are probably irrelevant to those of interest to you. But I can at least cite some posted flight costs. For instance, Tripbase has what they label ‘Historical Prices.’ They list Thai AirAsia at $124 for the 65-minute trip (I am unsure if this price is one-way, for it is not stipulated).   However, they also list Thai Airways at $657 — for a 10-hour 22-minute flight! What’s up with that?

I happen to be doing this update on July 11, 2011, and Orbitz has a calendar of this month with the a price of $238 entered into July 14th as a ‘Cheapest’ round-trip fare. ebookers has a similar calendar in British pounds — £171 is filled in for the same July date. Kayak quotes prices for several future dates: July 12 (return July 24) is $106; August 5 (return August 7) is $98; September 10 (return September 24) is $92; and December 10 (return December 15) is $95.

As you will note, all of these prices are for a round-trip fare. I did not come across any one-way prices — you will have to do an actual flight search and specify your specific date.
