I never before realized that Wikipedia actually has a sound sample under their entry for Luk thung. Their final statement in the discussion is this: “The mor lam influence has produced a new genre called luk thung Isan or luk thung prayuk, which incorporates the faster rhythms of mor lam.” And then they provide a sample from “Motorcy Harng” by Rock Salaeng (luk thung prayuk) from the album Ging Geu Tok Sang.
- This oldie is “the famous Phloen Phromdaen singing the song Lam Kaen“: Luk Thung sample. I found it on the blog HAJI MAJI.

- I’ve noticed this album before — Thai Pop Spectacular (1960s to 1980s). Eventually, I expect I’ll acquire it. However, it was only while researching this post that I discovered one of the songs from the album are on YouTube — the embed follows.
Sao Dok Kum Tai (Lady From A Flower) by Pompuang Duangjan
Pompuang Duangjan was known as the Queen of Luk Thung. As described by Far Side Music:
Pompuang Duangjan is one of Thailand’s greatest ever singers. She helped to bring the style called lukthung, a kind of Thai country music, to the masses, by updating it into a dance form, although she was also a fantastic singer of the slower lukthung ballads. She came from a poor family, the 5th child of 12, and was idolized by the country’s poorer classes, for whom she represented a dream of a young poor girl making good. When she died in 1992, aged 31, hundreds of thousands of people attended her funeral, including the royal family. Her status in Thailand is akin to say Edith Piaf in France or Hibari Misora in Japan.
- A song I saw given as an example of Luk Thung is this one by Pornak Songsaeng (Songsang), though I’ve read that his specialty is Mor Lam. I am not gifted enough at present to know the difference.
- This next example was presented as Isarn Barn How performed by Theeporn; but the video itself identifies it as Eee Sarn Ban How by Thepporn.
- A current peppy Luk Thung songstress is quite popular because she’s really cute…and because she had aspired to be a kick boxer. From the blog Thai-Eyes:
Cute Thai girl Kratae (real name: Namwannoi Sakboonwa) from Lampang, North Thailand had to make a decision between Muay Thai Kick Boxing and Luk Tung.
The beautiful and fragile looking Kratae challenged more than 40 Muay Thai fights and just missed to be an international champion in 2003, while she lost the day against Isabe Watanabe, a Japanese Kick Boxer.
In 2002 Kratae was winning the champion title in Thailand in the 45 kg class.
While she started her career as a Luk Tung singer, the risk of an injury
in a Muay Thai fight was too high, so Kratae had to give up her kick boxing carer.
Nowadays Kratae is a quite famous Luk Tung star, many of her songs are sung in northern Thai dialect, which made her much-loved in North Thailand.

‘Today I Will Sleep at Chiang Rai’ (Ta wan lap tee chiang rai) is an example of morlam/luk thung music. The video was filmed in the ancient Lanna capital of Chiang Rai.
